The best things to do on Cooper Creek
Cooper Creek is located an easy five-minute walk from the Innamincka Hotel. It is recognised as a feature in the story of Burke & Wills, but it's also a much-loved spot for locals and visitors alike to camp, fish and swim or just relax and take in the serenity of this stunning outback oasis.
The Cooper is the second largest inland waterway in Australia. Every year summer storms in Queensland fill the Thomson River, and over the course of a few months the water rolls through the Outback and down to Innamincka.
Definitely take the chance to visit the Cooper Creek. Even though we live here, we still go and camp by the Cooper on our days off. The water is so tranquil… we'll just sit by the fire and have a drink under the stars. It's only five minutes down the road but it feels like a million miles away.
When is the best time to visit?
Timing can vary year to year depending on weather conditions, but the best time to enjoy the Cooper Creek while it's full is usually from April through to September.
Best ways to make the most of the Cooper
-
Swim or kayak
Have a splash in the fresh water to cool off, or give us a call at the Innamincka Hotel to hire a kayak. Paddle along the serene waters and watch the birds and animals at play amongst the redgums and coolabah trees.
-
Fishing in the Cooper
Bring your rod or trap along and keep an eye out for Lake Eyre Golden Perch (Callop / Yellowbelly), and Welsh's Banded Perch (Barcoo Grunter), yabbies, shrimp and fresh water mussels.
-
Camp on the Cooper
For adventurous travellers, the Innamincka Town Common offers plenty of space to set up camp in a tent or van.
